Although I have spent a lot of time blogging about the dangers of DIY/document prep trademark services like LegalZoom or Trademark Engine, it is clear that these big non-law firms aren’t going anywhere soon. In fact, this industry appears to be growing. Unfortunately, so is the number of customers that have had poor experiences because they relied on these services.
Trademark Plus is one such service I came across recently. After checking out their site, I decided to do a quick search to see what people are saying about them. Their Better Business Bureau profile page came up, where they are rated as less than 1.5 stars out of 5 (edit: as of 3/10/22 this previously-linked BBB page has been taken down). That rating is bolstered by a single 5-star rating and, to a lesser extent, a 2-star rating that reads a lot like the other twenty-two 1-star ratings. Take a look at a few of the experiences posted by Trademark Plus users:
Take the Money and Run
I fell for their customer ratings on their own website…. I’ve been waiting now over two weeks and no response or results from the company. I had to contact my credit card company to fight the charges, to this day no one from the company has contacted me. I should have looked and the BBB first and I would have know it was a scam…… (1 out of 5 stars)
A common theme in these reviews is that the customer paid Trademark Plus and then never received services. I think that may be the definition of the word “scam,” which is a word that appears in 10 out of 24 of the reviews on this page. Also appearing is the related word “sham,” although it was only used in one review.
High and Dry
I submitted my application for a trademark of my logo. They charged me the fee and took payment from my credit card. The paperwork was not correct upon review, its been 8 weeks of leaving messages and emails and No ONE will return an email or call? I just need application fixed so we can submit it. (1 out of 5 stars)
I suppose the bright side here is that the customer received something here? But seriously, it is important that you not make mistakes on your trademark application. And when you pay someone else to prepare your application, you would expect it to be done correctly. At the very least, you would think that they would rectify any of the mistakes that they made. However, it is hard to fix any problem when you can’t get someone on the phone.
Two Stars
I mentioned above that 2 out of the 24 Trademark Plus reviews were for more than a single star. So I thought I would share with you what a 2-star review looks like:
This company never returns call on the application they helped file and do not assist when asked questions on the applications. I have left numerous messages and emails. (2 out of 5 stars)
Not much contrast with the 1-star reviews, is there? I have to wonder why the additional star here. Perhaps they were just grateful that they were able to get Trademark Plus to do anything?
